5 Questions to Ask Before You Compare Health Share Programs

5 Questions to Ask Before You Compare Health Share Programs

It's tempting to compare healthcare sharing programs the same way you'd compare insurance plans---premium versus premium. But that comparison misses most of what actually determines whether a program works well for your household. Start with these five questions instead.

1. What Am I Actually Responsible for Before Sharing Kicks In?

Every program has some version of a monthly and annual member contribution---the amount you pay each month to participate in a health share, and the amount you cover each year before eligible bills are shared. In most cases, you can choose the annual tier that works for you, but the monthly contribution amount will range based on a few lifestyle and demographic factors. Ask for some exact numbers to get an idea of what exactly you'll be paying.

2. Which Network Am I Actually Using?

"Nationwide network" can mean very different things. WeShare Health, for example, partners with the PHCS PPO Network, one of the largest independent PPO networks in the country. Ask any program you're considering to name theirs specifically so you can see if your current providers will work with your health sharing option.

3. How Are Bills Actually Handled?

Does the provider submit the bill directly, or are you expected to pay upfront and seek reimbursement? That difference has a real impact on your cash flow when a larger bill comes in. With WeShare Health, all bills from your providers office come to us first. You'll see an Explanation of Share that details what's shared by our member community and what you're still responsible for.

4. What Support Exists Beyond Medical Bills?

Telehealth, prescription savings, dental and vision discounts---these extras add real value and vary widely between programs. WeShare Health also includes partnerships with leading wellness brands to help members prioritize a well-rounded, healthy lifestyle.

5. Can I Actually Reach Someone When I Need To?

Call the number on the website before you enroll anywhere. How that call goes tells you a lot about what membership will actually feel like, and what happens when you need support in emergency situations.
